The Institute of Food Technologists, a nonprofit scientific society with more than 18,000 members from 100 countries, comprises food scientists and engineers from academia, government, and industry. I managed a staff of three producing several journals in the editorial division until the publication was outsourced.

After working for ten years in printing plants, Curt moved into association publishing. Starting as an production assistant to the Managing Editor, handling copy flow, page layouts, advertising materials, and press impositions, Curt moved the publications department from hot-wax paste-ups to electronic publishing.

Curt took on more duties, taking on primary responsibility for all annual publications including the membership directory and buyers’ guide for the 28,000-member association, the 400-page annual meeting program guide to the 1,800+ technical presentations and 900+ exhibitor descriptions of their top-100-rated convention.

Finally, becoming Managing Editor over a team of three, he coordinated editorial, design, production, and budgeting for the three scientific journals of the society, one in print and online, the other two online only. The print and Web production of the 2,400-page/year journal required managing two dozen freelancers and an internal staff of three. During his tenure, the Library of Congress chose his publication as a “high-priority” publication (one of only 300 nationally).

Operative Techniques in Otolaryngology: Head and Neck Surgery (an Elsevier journal) and
Sleep Apnea and Snoring: Surgical and Non-Surgical Therapy (a 472-page surgical atlas).

Curt worked for Dr. Michael Friedman, a top-ranked ear, nose, and throat surgeon, on the Elsevier-published journal he serves as Editor-in-Chief. He also managed the copy flow and medical illustrations for the Dr. Friedman’s surgical atlas on sleep apnea and snoring. Both projects involved a high level of contact with authors, medical illustrators, and printer representatives.
